  • GFCI won’t reset properly
  • Light bulbs keep burning out
  • Fire alarm won’t stop beeping

There are so many situations where electrical troubleshooting is necessary. If your job doesn’t involve installing something new or replacing a current fixture or device, it will probably require troubleshooting.

Our technicians are experts at troubleshooting. It is said that to be an expert troubleshooter, you must fix the problem in the least amount of time. Our electricians use approaches that allow them to analyze the problem to determine what the issue is and then fix it as quickly as possible.

There are five basic steps in troubleshooting:

  1. Observe the Issue
  2. Define the Problem
  3. Identify the Source
  4. Determine the Cause
  5. Analyze and Repair

It is important to know safety rules and procedures before starting to troubleshoot electrical issues. The rules should be followed at all times when preforming a troubleshoot. It is also important to understand how the device or equipment should be operated. When the troubleshooter knows how to properly operate a device, it becomes easier to figure out what the problem is.

The first step of troubleshooting, Observation, relies heavily on the senses. Electricians should look for signs of wear, listen for potential abnormalities, or smell for any burning. Anything that seems out of the ordinary should be reported.

Once an abnormality has been found it’s time to find out the problem. After observing the issue, the electrician should have a good idea of where the issue is located. Parts of the device that are not faulty should be ruled out by the observations until the one part of the device that is causing the problem is found.

After the problematic area has been found it is now time to identify the possible causes. To help with this step, writing down all aspects of the issue is key.

With your list, go over the potential causes and prioritize them from most likely to least. This will help with determining the most probable cause.

Lastly, go through the list and test each problem. Be careful with this step – handling electrical can be dangerous. Here you prove the fault or rule it out. After you find the source by testing, it’s time to repair the problem.
